Ray Merrihew - Center for Human Potential

I sometimes, with a client's permission, use Shamanic techniques to broaden a client's understanding of him/herself. This often provides insights not available by other means.

Shamanism originated more than 50,000 years ago, and is considered to humanity's oldest spiritual practice. It exists in every culture and in every country in the world.

I offer a 3 week introduction to Shamanic Journeying. Each session lasts from 1-2 hours. The charge is $50 for individual sessions and $20 if accepted into a Drumming Circle with others. The first two sessions will be individual followed by either individual or Drum Circle sessions, depending on availability. A side affect of drumming is that it relaxes you and elevates your mood. It feels good! Everyone can learn to journey.

About Shamanism:

With the advent of Western science, with its mechanistic outlook on life, Shamanism had largely died out in Western countries, except for Native practitioners on the mainland and in Hawaii and Alaska. US Anthropologist Michael Harner was introduced to Shamanic journeying while on a field assignment in Brazil. He found journeying to be a life changing experience, as it has been for me. Michael brought the practice back to the US and through his research developed what he calls Core Shamanism. Core Shamanism includes the elements common to all Shamans around the world. He found that a steady percussive sound, such as a drum, enables one to gain access to, to journey to, what he calls Non-Ordinary reality. There, with the help of one's Compassionate Helping Spirits, one can obtain guidance for living, knowledge and divination, and sometimes for physical and emotional healing. It is a powerful and empowering means of seeking help and knowledge. Many have compared Shamanic journeying to a deep meditative experience.

Michael founded the Foundation for Shamanic Studies which has trained many thousands of people in the Western world how to reconnect with their spiritual roots through Shamanic drum journeys.

FSS conducts continuing research in journeying, often developing new advanced workshops, such as working with weather. FSS provides financial support for the rather old remaining shamans in Eastern Block countries in which Shamanism was forbidden for many years. This allows those Shamans, whom he calls Living Treasures, to spend all their time teaching and guiding new Shamans in their area of the world.

Early on, Sandra Ingerman worked with Michael Harner and she developed a specialty in Soul Retrieval journeys. She also holds an MA in Counseling Psychology and is a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist. Sandra has lead workshops on Shamanism around the world, and has written several books on Shamanism. One of her best known books is Soul Retrieval.

The basic book on Shamanism is Michael Harner's The Way of the Shaman. Another shorter book is Sandra Ingerman's Shamanic Journeying - A Beginners Guide. Michael Harner's latest book is Cave and Cosmos, published in 2013.
